FLORIANOPOLIS

Capital of the State of Santa Catarina occupies the central third of Santa Catarina Island. The link to the mainland is made easily via two public bridges one of which is Brazil's largest suspension bridge. The island is a large beach community. In addition to the bay and ocean beaches, there is also a large lagoon - Lagoa da Conceicao - several exhilarating vistas from hillside overlooks and the preserved remain or ruins of three old fortifications from the colonial period. The shoreline is divided into three sections: north, south and east coasts.

FULL DAY BLUMENAU: Exit from Florianopolis along the scenic Green Valey of Itajai –Acu River on the way to Blumenau. Due to the influence of the early German settlers such as Fritz Muller and Dr. Hermann Brunno Otto Blumenau, the city is now a small piece of Germany in Brazil. In fact, Blumenau is home of the largest Oktoberfest outside Germany. Visit the Museum of Fritz Muller, the pharmacist and naturalist who studied the local fauna and flora while he kept close correspondence with Charles Darwin. His residence now is the museum where his private collection of local species is preserved. Stop for lunch (not included), after drive through the city and see the Biergarten where the Oktoberfest is held, as well the Mausoleum of Dr. Blumenau before stopping to visit the Glas Park, or Crystal Museum. Then proceed to downtown for shopping, browsing through the city’s commercial streets where the of the typical shops are located within a short walk from City Hall, built in typical Bavarian architecture, and the Saint Apostle Church, built in 1963. Return to Florianopolis.
